Growers
Levy paying members
Under the statute that led to the formation of the Horticultural Development Company (HDC), which manages the horticultural levy for the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), all horticultural producers with annual sales, (less allowable deductions), exceeding £60,000 or more are eligible to pay the levy, except those growing hops. The levy is currently set at 0.5% plus VAT of sales and is collected each year starting in April. A similar system operates for mushroom growers but is based on the amount of spawn purchased.
Voluntary members
Growers with an annual turnover of less than £60,000 can share in the benefits of membership and support horticultural research by making a voluntary contribution. The cost of voluntary membership is currently £150 plus VAT per year.

Non-Growers
Corporate and Producer Organisation members
UK companies involved in the horticultural industry can also become members. Our corporate membership includes agrochemical suppliers, equipment manufacturers, fertiliser and media producers, seed producers, and supermarkets. Corporate members demonstrate support for British horticulture to their customers, and may use the HDC logo in advertising literature.
The subscription for this category of membership is as follows:
Annual turnover: |
1) under £0.5 million = £500 plus VAT |

2) between £0.5 and £2.5 million = £1,000 plus VAT |
|
3) over £2.5 million = £2,000 plus VAT |
Consultant members
Consultants working in the UK horticultural industry can join the HDC. In this way they demonstrate their support for the industry and have access to results from the R&D programme.
For an individual consultant operating an independent single consultancy the annual cost is £500 plus VAT. For consultancy groups the annual cost is £500 plus £100 (total cost plus VAT) for each additional named consultant. Attendance at events can only be as a named consultant.
Education members
Establishments such as colleges and universities are encouraged to join the HDC because of the great benefit to their staff and students. The cost is £500 plus VAT per year per information pack.
Associate members
Research institutions and other establishments which do not fit in to one of the above categories are also invited to be members of HDC. The cost of membership is £500 plus VAT per year.
