Research & Development priorities for bulbs:The first bulb R&D priority meeting was held in Cornwall on the 3rd December. Thank you to everyone who attended and for your valuable input. A further meeting in Eastern England will be held on 13th January 2010. Further details to follow. HDC/FV Panel - The FV Panel bid farewell to Peter Cornish, chair of the FV Panel (2001-2009), at a Field Vegetables Panel meeting that was held this week. The HDC and the Panel are very grateful for his dedication and service to industry. We wish him well in all his endeavours. The Following reports were sent out to FV growers this week:

HDC Weed identification guide - This guide was first published by HDC in 2006 and sent to all field vegetable members. Stocks were depleted quickly, but following popular demand, we have funded a re-print. Extra copies can be procured by contacting Sarah Bond on 0247 647 8661 or at sarah.bond@hdc.org.uk Rothamsted Research and ADAS are currently monitoring development of insecticide resistance in peach-potato aphid, particularly to newly introduced insecticides. They need samples of the aphid and will arrange to take samples. Mushroom magazine supplement - HDC has prepared a magazine supplement for soft fruit growers, which will be mailed out with the December issue of HDC News. It will provide a summary of the most useful results from recent and ongoing soft fruit projects. At the recent mushroom panel meeting, panel members requested that a similar supplement be produced for mushroom growers. Work will begin on this in the New Year. |

HDC PC-Edibles R&D Strategies: Updated R&D Strategies for all Protected Edible crops are now available on the HDC webpage: http://www.hdc.org.uk/sectors/PC_RandD.asp. The main sector document will be updated shortly. TGA/HDC Tomato P&D Seminar, Thursday 14 January 2010, Avon Suite, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. Topics covered will include: Viruses and viroids, their current status and results of research projects. These will include Columnea latent viroid (CLVd) and Pepino mosaic virus. Bacterial canker (Clavibacter michiganensis). Tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). South American tomato moth (Tuta absoluta). In addition to the control of this pest, the potential implications for trade if the UK is designated with Protected Zone status within EU plant health arrangements will be discussed. Preventing and managing quarantine pest and disease threats, a practical guide. Attendance at the seminar is free but pre-registration for the event is required as it is likely to be heavily subscribed. The latest date for registration is 7th January 2010. HDC announce Vice Chair: We are pleased to announce that Mike Mann, Winchester Growers, has been appointed as the Vice-chair of the Protected Ornamental panel. We look forward to working with him. Request for samples of cyclamen with bacterial soft rot - As part of project PC 291, Tim O'Neill (ADAS) and John Elphinstone (Fera) are seeking samples of cyclamen with suspect bacterial soft rot. The objective is to determine the speceies of Pectobacterium (Erwinia) associated with the disease in the UK. Please send suspect samples, at an early stage of the disease if possible (i.e. before complete collapse of the top), to: Mr A Aspin, Fera, Sand Hutton, York YO41 1LZ. Do not post samples on a Friday or the disease is likely to be too far advanced by the Monday. Please enclose brief details (eg a compliments slip with contact details, and name of the variety). Stone fruit LINK project TF 194 - Technical manager Andrew Tinsley attended a consortium meeting of this project last week. The project is developing biocontrol methods in an IPM programme for plums and cherries. Results and details will become available next year.
